AIDS is currently the leading cause of death in Haiti, where there are more than 200,000 people with the disease, said Minister of Health, Gabriel Timothée today. According to the minister, the infant mortality rate is also increasing, given the number of children infected with HIV. He says at least 25,000 children are orphaned by the disease. At least 2 percent of the population suffers from AIDS.

Timothée acknowledged some progress in the country as a result of improved understanding of the risks of disease and improvements in the behavior of infected people. He called on Haitians to participate on Sunday in a set of activities aimed at informing and preventing people about the risks of HIV.
