September 7, 2011--Journalist Ansel Herz broke the original story to international media of the phone video recording of an alleged sexual assault of a Haitian youth by Uruguyan soldiers in Port Salut, Haiti in July. Yesterday, he gave a seven minute interview from Port Salut to CBC Radio One's As It Happens.

"Things are approaching the breaking point," for MINUSTAH's presence in Haiti, he told As It Happens. In his reporting, Herz is one of the few journalists to cite the long list of MINUSTAH crimes or misconduct being committed against the Haitian people, including the outbreak of cholera in October 2010 that has killed more than 6,000 Haitians, the engagement by MINUSTAH soldiers in prostitution, underaged sex and coerced sex (eg. "sex for food"), and MINUSTAH's role in suppressing political expression.

In the case of this latest outrage, Herz is the only reporter documenting the despoilation of the environment surrounding Port Salut due to the dumping of trash and sewage along its oceanside at Port Salut. Local residents are livid about this, too.
